What we do
NESEC’s goal is to enable broad participation in authentic NASA Earth STEM experiences for lifelong learners. We do this by creating engaging, meaningful, and authentic STEM experiences and resources that are:
- Based on NASA Earth science
- Tailored to specific audiences’ needs
- Supportive of diverse learners throughout their lifetimes

How we do it
Citizen Science
Fostering deeper engagement in NASA Earth science by extending opportunities for everyone to take part in the scientific process.
Science Investigations
Creating opportunities for authentic science engagement with NASA science, data, and subject matter experts.
Strategic Partnerships
Reaching broad audiences through strategic partnerships and collaborations with a wide range of organizations.
Outreach
NESEC outreach and communications span numerous publications, presentations, and events: papers and conference presentations in scientific, technical, and educational domains; educational workshops, webinars, and large-scale outreach events and social media that reached over 9 million in FY 2022 alone.
Numbers as of September 27, 2024

What people are saying
-
“We love the student-centered and real-time data collection tools…and the inquiry and design-based approaches throughout NESEC’s work."
Annual NESEC Partner Survey
-
“These kits are going to save summer programming. We can’t afford to send home supplies like bigger libraries can, this is like Christmas for us!"
NASA@ My Library participating librarian, on receiving NESEC "Take and Make" activity kits.
-
"Technology as a tool is incredibly motivating. Having NASA as a learning partner is also a strong motivator. My students rotate through their science investigation teams daily to make sure their cloud and contrail observations are completed with accuracy and that NASA receives the data in a timely manner…. In our second quarter the county assessment testing showed a 76.83% mastery of the objective that we just could not seem to meet before our participation in GLOBE."
Dr. Caryn Long, Treadway Elementary School, Florida
-
“The more photos we took the more we began to enjoy it, and the more we began to take notice of things around us. We began to think about how the photos were being used and enjoyed seeing the progressing map of where the photos were being taken.”

-
“I was originally intending to pursue an AI programming degree. However, after experiencing this internship and learning all the remote sensing tools, I realized that science was very diverse. Moreover, everything that I learned in this internship can be applied to future research projects and I am very excited for that.”
